Over time pools become stained even in the best circumstances. Most of these stains are turquoise in color due to the copper plumbing. When too many chemicals are added to your pool, or they are not added properly, stains appear sooner. Knowing what chemicals need to be used can minimize staining. This is another reason why you should hire a professional pool service.
An acid wash removes many stains from a pool. It does this by taking off a small amount of plaster and exposing fresh plaster. If pools are not acid washed regularly, the stains will go deeper into the plaster causing the need for more plaster to be removed to get to the stains.
If acid washes are not done correctly, too much plaster could be removed, then the plaster becomes rough, like sandpaper. Rough plaster looks bad, traps dirt and algae, cuts swimmer’s feet, and causes you to have to re-plaster your pool sooner than expected. We’ve done hundreds of acid washes, and we know when an acid wash needs to be done plus we know how to do it right. We will make your pool look as good as possible, and if we can’t, we will tell you.
Dark plaster pools, pebble tech pools, and spas
Dark plaster pools also become stained, but the stains on a dark plaster pool are lighter than the plaster, not darker like on a white plaster pool. Acid washing a dark plaster pool makes the pool darker, and will get rid of the algae, which is a good thing because chlorine will leave a bleach stain on a dark plastered pool.
Pebble tech pools don’t stain, but they need to be drained and acid washed to get rid of the algae (it has a tendency to grab onto the pebbles rougher surface).
Spas also need to be drained and replaced with fresh water even more frequently than pools. Acid washes will clean up stains on spas just like pools. This includes fiberglass spas. We do not drain or acid wash fiberglass pools, pools that have been resurfaced with fiberglass, or vinyl-lined pools.

A chlorine wash gets rid of algae in the pool and it helps prevent algae from growing in the future. A chlorine wash can be done after an acid wash, if there is any algae still present, or by itself. Chlorine washes are the best way to kill black algae that grows into the plaster.
A chlorine wash is one of the best things you can do to regularly maintain your pool. It will get rid of all your algae and stop future algae from appearing, including black algae. You will have fresh water, which means you will use fewer chemicals. Calcium will not build up as quickly on your plaster, tile, and plumbing, simply because you have fresh water in your pool.
